How much time does it take to post to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook yourself?

About 30 to 40 minutes per story if you do it carefully across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook. That is roughly two hours a week at three posts, or about five hours a week if you post daily. The apps cost nothing. Your hours do not.

People treat this as twenty minutes on the phone. Count the minutes for a week before you decide that. Include failed uploads, the wrong Page, and logging into Meta on a laptop because the phone app will not take the link.

Where do the minutes go?

  • Instagram: about five minutes to recast the headline and caption, plus a crop that survives the 4:5 frame.
  • TikTok: about eight minutes if you already have a vertical clip — much more if you do not.
  • LinkedIn: about five minutes so it does not read like a Facebook post.
  • Facebook: about four minutes, plus checking the link preview.

That is about 22 minutes when nothing goes wrong. Things go wrong. A realistic average for careful posting is 30 to 40 minutes. Add Threads or Bluesky and you are near 45.

What is that time worth?

Price the hours like a freelancer. At €50 an hour, three hours of posting is €150 a week, about €600 a month, more than €7,000 a year. You would not hire a social freelancer for €7,000 to paste the same URL into four apps. You are doing it yourself for free.

Compare that with self-serve distribution. DistroPost Starter is €15 a month, or €10 a month billed annually, for up to three channels and 30 posts. Creator is €25 a month, or €20 annual, for five channels and 50 posts. If the software only gave back two hours a month, it would still clear its cost at a modest freelance rate. It is aimed at the rewriting, not at shaving a minute off a queue.

Why doesn’t Buffer give those hours back?

People search for a way to cross-post without Buffer because a calendar did not return the hours. Schedulers store captions and fire them. They do not know that Instagram cannot take the same link as LinkedIn, or that TikTok is a different medium. You still write four posts. You have moved the paste into a nicer screen.

The expensive part is adaptation: voice, length, image, and a last look. That should happen once, with every network visible. If a tool cannot show the TikTok line next to the LinkedIn line, it cannot save this cost. It can only move it.

How do you take the time back?

Count real minutes for a week. Multiply by your hourly rate. Subtract only the time a tool actually removes — rewriting and reformatting, not just scheduling. If hours remain, the workflow is wrong.

DistroPost is built so you write the piece once, review every platform version together, and publish. You still choose which networks deserve the story. You do not owe TikTok a version of everything. You owe yourself a process that does not punish you for publishing.

Key takeaways

  • Plan on 30–40 minutes per story across four networks, not 20 minutes on your phone.
  • Three careful posts a week is about two hours. Daily posting is about five.
  • At a freelance rate, that is thousands of euros a year of unpaid production.
  • A scheduler keeps captions. A review screen is what cuts the rewriting.

Write once. Review once. Publish everywhere.
